30 Years Old: The Confessions of a Guy Without Good Looks

At 30 Years Old With The Heartbreaking Confessions of a Guy “Without Good Looks, It’s Hard to Dream of Success”

Success, in the eyes of many people, is often associated with confidence, communication skills and an indispensable part is appearance. In today’s society, good looks are often considered a great advantage. Especially in fields such as marketing, sales and communications, attractive appearance is often considered an advantage.

For this reason, some individuals believe that achieving success will become more difficult and bumpy without an attractive appearance. The age of 30 is an important milestone in everyone’s life. For many people, this is the stage when they have achieved many significant achievements in their career and life.

However, for me, a guy without good looks, the age of 30 brings a lot of pain and a sense of failure. In today’s society, appearance seems to be an important factor in determining a person’s success.

This is my story – I am William, an unlucky person with a beautiful appearance but still constantly dreams and strives to assert myself.

Starting from Childhood Days…

Since I was a child, I realized that I did not have outstanding looks. When my classmates started to get attention for their bright appearance, I was often forgotten. At parties and group games, I was often the one standing on the sidelines, quietly watching my friends having fun. Teasing about my appearance began to appear, and gradually, I felt self-conscious and withdrawn.

When I entered my teenage years, the difference in appearance became more obvious. I did not have white skin, a handsome face, and did not have the advantage of height. At class reunions, I was often compared to other boys. The feeling of self-consciousness and inferiority began to take root in my mind. I began to wonder, is appearance really that important? And will not being handsome make it difficult for me to achieve success?

Confessions About My College Years…

When I entered university, I hoped that the new environment would help me change and find confidence. But things were not as easy as I thought. My classmates, especially the girls, often favored boys with good looks. Once again, I had to face the feeling of being forgotten and even looked down upon.

In presentations and group activities, I always tried to show myself through knowledge and skills. But sometimes, I felt that I was still not appreciated just because of my appearance. Handsome boys, even though sometimes they did not have outstanding abilities, still easily received more attention and favor. This made me disappointed and unfair.

Entering Life and the First Difficulties…

After graduating, I entered life with hope and a desire to assert myself. The reality was harsh, but the reality was even harsher than I thought. In job interviews, I often felt judged because of my appearance and abilities. Many times, despite my ability and experience, I was still unreasonably rejected.

I remember the times I went to interviews, despite having good qualifications and skills, I was often eliminated right from the first round just because I did not have an outstanding appearance like other candidates. Times like that made me wonder, are ability and knowledge really as important as appearance?

I began to realize that appearance is really important in many industries. Jobs related to communication, customer service, even management, all prioritize people with good looks. This made me feel frustrated and wondered if I could really succeed without an attractive appearance.

Below are some examples and experiments showing the advantages that people with good looks can achieve.

  • Real Stories Around Us

A specific example is the story of David, a friend of mine. David is not good-looking either, but he is very smart and talented. After graduating from university with excellent results, David also had a lot of difficulty finding a suitable job. In a confession, David said that he had participated in dozens of interviews but still did not receive any job offers.

He felt that he was undervalued just because he did not have a bright appearance. Minh shared that many times he felt like giving up because he felt unfair and lost confidence in himself.

Not only in work, my love life also encountered many difficulties. While my friends around me easily attracted attention and affection from the opposite sex, I felt like an invisible person, always ignored in conversations and social activities. This made me feel insecure and doubtful about my ability to find true love.

  • Attractive People Get Higher Salaries

What social psychologists call the “Halo Effect” is the belief that people who look better tend to do better.

So attractive people are often paid higher than average due to this biased perception.

Another survey conducted with Americans and Canadians found that attractive people earn 12% to 14% more than less attractive people.

In addition, they conducted research on attractive real estate brokers, who often earn much higher profits than less attractive people.

  • Beautiful People Have Higher Confidence

In addition, experiments have shown that, due to the “Halo Effect,” attractive people are more sociable, more sympathetic to those around them, mentally healthy, intelligent, and more resilient than unattractive people.

The reason is that cute kids who grow into attractive adults benefit from this effect for many years, boosting their self-confidence.

  • They Are More Socially Sociable

Physical attractiveness naturally enhances social and interpersonal skills, according to Mobius and Rosenblat's experiments. This has a significant impact throughout a person's career. According to many studies, career success depends more on a person's social skills than on their intellectual abilities.

  • Attractive Women Are Easier to Negotiate

According to a report by Shana Lebowitz at Business Insider, men are more tolerant of unfairness when it comes from an attractive woman.

Therefore, they are more tolerant of unfairness toward beautiful women than they are toward unattractive women.

  • Good-looking People Have More Difficulty in Job Interviews If Their Interviewers Are Uglier Than Them

Beautiful people don't always get all the benefits.

In Heidi Grant Halvorson’s book “No One Understands You and What to Do About It,” she offers the following explanation:

In a job interview, if the interviewer feels less attractive than the interviewee, they may feel threatened and therefore want to avoid being threatened by not hiring that person.

Several other studies have also proven this.

Life is unfair, and situations like this gradually became the source of my low self-esteem and inferiority complex. reflects the truth of the saying “It’s Hard to Be a Good Looking Person.”
